Gornji Bihor


Berane is the centre of the municipality of the same name and one of the centres of Polimlje area, named after Lim River, on which Berane is situated. The minuicipality consists of 27 smaller units and the total of 66 populated places.

The municipality of Berane is right in the middle of the mountain Bjelasica in the west, Cmiljevica in the east, Tivran canyon in the north, and Sutjeska and Previja in the south, which gives it a nice natural sorrounding.

The municipality area spreads across 647 km². 91% of that area is coposed of fertile soil (about 62 ha). The municipality of Berane has a population of about 35.000 (the town of Berane around 13.000).

The climate of the area is moderate-continental, though in certain places summer temperatures can reach 37°C, while winter temperatures can drop -30°C bellow zero. The spring arrives early, which is suitable for agricultural activities and vegetative period that has a duration of 250 days on average. Winters are long with low temperatures.

The Lim river is responsible for making the area rich in terms of water quantity, but the water has never been used for energy exploatation by building power plants. The river is home to various fish species (between 11 and 15 of them).

Regardless of its natural resources the Municipality of Berane is still one of the poorest ones in Montenegro. Industrial production is practically non-existant especially in the last 10 years. The poverty rate was additionally increased as a consequence of people moving to industrial areas, thus neglecting agriculture. Recently, a lot of small private businesses were established, but those mainly revolve around trade and tourism, very few around production. The Workforce of those small companies is employed mainly illegally, which decreases social impact and significance of the same companies. The total number of employed people is 3000.

Within the municipality there are 4 secondary schools, 13 primary schools and 1 kindergarden. The health centre employs 61 doctors, 20 dentists and 350 health care employees with no higher education.

According to the last 2003 census, the population of the whole Berane municipality was 35.068, that occupy 66 residential places.
